Akin and St. Clair Village 900 Hoarding Mural Project
Call for Muralist / Graffiti Artist Applications
“The Spirit of St Clair”

Akin is teaming up with Canderel to create three murals on three separate sections of aluminum hoarding at 900 St. Clair Ave West. We are looking for up to three artists or three artist teams to be part of this professional public mural project celebrating “The Spirit of St. Clair”.

This call is open to both established and emerging artists that are Akin studio members, working individually or in collaboration as a team. We encourage more traditional muralists to apply as well as graffiti artists and those interested in expanding their practices into the public realm for the first time. There will be three panels to be painted. You may submit an application for one, two or all three panels.

Submission deadline: 11:59pm on October 13, 2019

The three hoarding sections measure:

  • PANEL 1: 10’ wide x 8’ high - 80sf

  • PANEL 2: 5’ wide x 8’ high - 40sf

  • PANEL 3: 5’ wide x 8’ high - 40sf

Compensation:

  • PANEL 1: 80sf hoarding - $1000 + $400 paint/brush budget (per artist or artist team)

  • PANEL 2: 40sf hoarding - $500 + $200 paint/brush budget (per artist or artist team)

  • PANEL 3: 40sf hoarding - $500 + $200 paint/brush budget (per artist or artist team)

Final artwork will be painted on-site in between October 26 2019 - November 8 2019.

Ladders, face masks, gloves and goggles will be provided for all participants. Primer and anti-graffiti coating will also be provided. Please note that it is up to the selected artists to prime the panels before painting and coat them afterwards. Akin will also provide acrylic, latex or aerosol paints for each artist or artist team providing the artist or team submits a complete materials list along with their signed contract. Artists will have a materials budget for paint and other materials (see compensation notes above for materials budget). Akin will provide tents in the event that there is rain during the painting days.

The project consists of 3 separate sections of white aluminum hoarding that are separated by Canderel promotions. The final artwork should be complementary to the surrounding promotions which consist of mainly orange, blue, white colours. See image below for an example of the promotions and their placement:

Artists may create designs specifically for this Call or may reformat an existing work as long as it fits within the theme of “The Spirit of St Clair” and compliments the surrounding Canderel promotions.
