Akin Show and Tell - Akin Sunrise

  • Akin Sunrise - Studio 106A 100 Sunrise Avenue Toronto, ON, M4A 1B3 Canada (map)

Every month Akin hosts a relaxed and fun ‘Show and Tell for Artists’ at one of the Akin Collective studios or at one of our partner organizations' locations. This is a time for Akin members and other Toronto artists to show completed works or works in progress and get friendly feedback and answers from their peers in a casual studio setting.

Feel free to bring art to share, bring a friend or two, bring snacks or drinks or just bring yourself! Come for the conversation or just to meet other artists and makers. This is FREE public event - everyone is welcome!

This edition of the Show and Tell is happening at Akin Sunrise - 100 Sunrise Ave, in studio 106A and will be co-hosted by Akin Studio Manager artist Jeff Tallon and special guest Dorica Manual of Y+ contemporary.

About Dorica Manuel:
Dorica Manuel is a Canadian artist and curator based in Toronto, Ontario. Manuel’s practice is informed by her Canadian upbringing and Filipino heritage, the merging of which creates a tension that she tries to reconcile through performative video and photographic works. Her craft raises notions of spirituality, culture and identity. Manuel received an HBA in Studio Art with a double minor in English Literature and Media Studies from the University of Toronto at Scarborough. She is a co-founder of Y+ contemporary located in Scarborough. https://doricamanuel.com/

About Y+ contemporary:
Y+ contemporary is an artist-run space co-founded in 2015. Y+ aims to provide an inclusive platform for artistic production, engagement, and experimentation, with a focus on emerging practices. They are currently operating as a studio and storefront gallery in Scarborough. http://ypluscontemporary.com/

Accessibility:
There is step free access to the main entrance located at the side of the building parallel to the parking lot. The first door on the right hand side, once in the main entrance, is access to the studio. The studio entrance requires a key and there is no button to open the door, so someone may require assistance. There are narrow aisles and sharp turns to get into the gender-neutral washroom within the space. There are no grab bars in the bathroom and the toilet is not raised. There is a small lip on the floor upon entering the bathroom. Akin does have access to a wheelchair accessible gender-neutral washroom in the hall across from the Akin studio within the building. The space is not ideal for people with sensory processing issues, due to the white noise in the building.

Getting There:
By TTC: Take the Bloor-Danforth Subway Line to Coxwell Station. Proceed to city bus 70A or 70B. Exit bus at Sunrise Ave, it is a 400 meter walk to 100 Sunrise Avenue.
