Queerleidoscope is a self-performance in video installation, serving as a metaphor for the multifaceted aspects of my journey in queer self-discovery.
Like many in the LGBTQ community, I was raised in a world that denied our existence, imposing upon us the adoption of a single, socially acceptable performance from the perspective of our parents, relatives, and society. We were rendered invisible, or visible only when our expressions were constrained within the narrow bounds of conformity. As we matured, we gradually became more static, monotonic, and faded.
Unlike a gentle blossoming, discovering one's queer essence in adulthood compels us to disfigure the old self, clearing the way for the emergence of the new, the genuine self long suppressed. In these moments, the existence of a safe and welcoming community makes all the difference. They pave the path for us to reveal ourselves and be perceived as we truly are.
About Renato Baldin
I am a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist, curator, and LGBTQ activist from Brazil, specializing in immersive installations shaped by my background in Architecture, Museology, and Queer Culture. My work is inspired by Anthropology, Psychology, and Philosophy, converging within artistic spaces. After years working in museum designing exhibitions, I've now embraced my career as an emerging visual artist. I like to fuse lived experiences, theory, and visuals, crafting three-dimensional experiences, inviting people for interacting and sharing reflections. My recent works were "Empathy Museum – Walking in My Shoes" in São Paulo, "Rocking Futures," and "Narcissus," a photo installation exploring toxic masculinity, oppression of beauty industry, and queerness.
