Join Akin for a special edition of our ongoing Show & Tell series centered around honoring your artistic voice and ideas- why you do what you do, as an artist and how you situate your practice in the greater political, economic, social & historical context? What does it mean to make art that not everyone likes? What does it mean to make art that some folks disagree with? What are the layers to ‘calling in’ when it comes to art work someone has made? Navigating your artistic voice can be complex, nuanced and challenging. Let’s chat about that!

Akin has been reflecting on how we honor the artists and arts workers we support, collaborate with and are guided by and what it means to offer programming in a way that leaves room for respectful, honest debate and discussion around what folks feel is fair and right -what is it not okay to make art about, how words are loaded, what it means to let folks be their authentic selves- even if some might not agree). The use of Buddah’s name in our event description for our recent Wellness Session left us with lessons, questions and ideas and we’re eager to chat things through as a group. How can art help generate change? What are our roles as artists in addressing social issues? In this open discussion, let’s share perspectives on art as an entry point to advocacy.

About the facilitator Shadi Mogadime:
Shadi (pronounced so it rhymes with buddy) has been a student of many modalities in 30+ years of spiritual and personal growth exploration. Her deepest dive is in esoteric Buddhism and in the practices of meditation, yoga, and qigong as well as other wellness technologies. For the last five years, she has used these experiences and the knowledge she developed to mentor organizations and coach individual clients from around the world. Shadi feels fortunate to have spent her 25-year professional career in the charitable sector fundraising and marketing for the missions of crucial humanitarian causes, arts & culture nonprofits and social change organizations. Along with her on-going coaching and mentoring work, her current focus is a company she launched in December 2020 in response to requests from clients and community members called Conversations for World Change. Its mission is to help people realize and thrive as they live their mission in life and work. It includes coaching for individuals, organization mentoring and special events.
